Anurag Kashyap’s way to make history without an A-list cast
In 2012 Anurag Kashyap banged the doors of world cinema with a very, very off beat movie.
He took Godfather, Goodfellas, Gangs of New York to name a few and hotchpotch them with the backdrop of rural india.
The villages. The unglamorous lives.
And probably made a movie that started the spree of these stories from rural india.
And this was rather unheard of.
Though Indian cinema isn’t all new about villages and gangs–most of the films were filled with people that didn’t look like an average villager would look like.
But this indeed changed with Gangs of Wasseypur.
Point in note: none of the actors in the movie was even near being an A-listers. It was only after the movie was released that their careers changed.
Because after all this is what actors do. Not writers but actors.
Let’s settle this:
I’d rather watch a poorly written movie that has great performances.
Then a greatly written movie where actors are struggling to even believe that they are indeed actors.
And the obvious reason behind that choice is:
That’s how we humans are built.
We would not only believe but be readily entertained if somebody believes in whatever they are saying.
This is why so many conmans perform bluffs that makes people go:
“They can never do that to me.”
They can.
They just have to make themselves feel believable.
And believe me or not if you can do this, you don’t have to be a great writer, nah…, not even a good writer to write interesting stuff that people will send you replies how good it is.
Yup, that’s how the game goes.
